Defenders: The H Word

Netflix and Marvel Studios have been collaborating for a while now, giving us some great shows. We’ve seen two seasons of Daredevil, and one each of Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Now, just as the solo heroes came together to form the Avengers in the Marvel movies, the Netflix characters are uniting as the Defenders. Also along for the ride are much of the supporting cast from the individual shows, and the enigmatic Madame Gao, as well as Claire Temple, the only character to appear in all four series so far. I’m presuming that if you’re watching/interested in Defenders, you’ve seen the shows that came before it, so I’m not explaining every reference.

Champions 11

The Secret Empire “event” has been hard on just about everyone. I haven’t followed the main story, because I honestly don’t care about it, but I’ve seen a lot of the edges of it as it spills into the various titles that I regularly get. And things get ugly for the young heroes of the Champions this month.

Iron Fist #1 review

Marvel isn’t likely to waste a chance at cashing in on publicity. With the Netflix series recently starting, Marvel Comics gave Iron Fist his own title again. The Kung Fu hero has recently been appearing in the Power Man and Iron Fist book, but now he’s out on his own again. Neither this book…

Legion: Chapter 6

Last episode ended with the wrenching transition from the real world to what appears to be a recreation of the Clockworks Institute, with a few differences. Whether this is a mental construct like David and Syd’s “white room” or whether David restructured reality with his immense power isn’t wholly clear (like a lot of this…

Legion: Chapter 3

The strangeness that is Legion continues with “Chapter 3.” Given how odd the show is, I keep waiting for one of the episodes to randomly veer away from the Chapter title, but it hasn’t happened yet. Then again, the show has plenty of weirdness on its own, and probably doesn’t need to rely on episode…

Legion: Chapter Two

“Chapter 2″ continues Legion’s kind of trippy story. It’s a very well crafted show with some really stunning visuals and some really interesting ideas. I’m not entirely sure why it’s so sharply separated from the X-Men movies, since the show’s on Fox, and Fox is the studio doing those films. It’s an even odder…

The Unstoppable Wasp #1 review

Marvel has been developing a lot of new characters lately, many of them females carrying their own books. I’m glad to see it, and even more glad to be enjoying it. The new Wasp showed up a while ago in one of the Avengers books, and wandered around as a background character briefly. Now, she gets her own title in “The Unstoppable Wasp.”

Champions #3 review

The new Champions (absolutely no relation to the 1970’s team) is continuing to come together. They have their membership established, as far as we know, but they are still working things out like who’s in charge, which comes up over and over this issue. Personally, I’d probably vote for Ms. Marvel, but who knows what’ll happen.

Star Wars Annual #2 review

The brave Rebel Alliance and the tyrannical Empire clash in their seemingly endless war. Everyone knows the two sides and what they stand for. But what about other people? No war has everyone take one side or the other. This annual tells the story of Pash Davane, a large and powerful laborer nicknamed Bash. Her planet, Skoril-Lei has been harshly damaged by the Galactic Civil War, and all she sees is death and destruction on both sides.

Thor #12 review

Since Jane Foster took up Mjolnir, it’s been acting a lot differently than for anyone else who has wielded it. Last issue, it even helped keep her secret identity, much to the confusion of a few rabid SHIELD agents. This issue goes back and tells the origin of Thor’s hammer. In the past, there’s just been a passing reference to the dwarves of Nidavellir forging the hammer from mystic uru and that’s been about it.
