Due to the worldwide Covid-19 outbreak, this year’s comic book movie release schedule has been delayed. Many comic book movies scheduled for theatrical release in 2020 have been pushed back to later in the year or to 2021. Because the coronavirus outbreak is a fluid situation, it’s difficult to know what will and will not change. Here’s what we know so far about superhero movies coming out in 2021:
Eternals
Release Date: February 12, 2021
Director: Chloe Zhao
Cast: Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington
The Eternals movie was set for a November 6, 2020 release, but it has been pushed back to 2021 due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Director: Andy Serkis
Cast: Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson
The plot of the Venom sequel is said to be centered around Woody Harrelson as Carnage up against Tom Hardy reprising as Venom. Venom: Let There Be Carnage was originally slated to be released on October 2, 2020 but was pushed back to 2021 because of Covid-19.
Morbius
Release Date: March 19, 2021
Director: Daniel Espinosa
Cast: Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson
A companion film to the Sony side of the Marvel Universe, Morbius was pushed to its new release date but was initially supposed to come out this summer on July 31, 2020, but coronavirus has derailed those plans.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Release Date: May 7, 2021
Director: Destin Daniel Cretton
Writer: Dave Callaham
Cast: Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Tony Leung
Shang-Chi will reportedly pick up the Ten Rings thread mentioned in the Iron Man movies. Shang-Chi has been pushed back from the original theatrical debut of February 2021.
The Batman
Release Date: October 1, 2021
Director: Matt Reeves
Cast: Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Peter Sarsgaard and Jeffrey Wright
This newest installment of Batman may or may not be a reset for the character but will star Robert Pattinson rather than Ben Affleck, but it is unclear whether or not it’s the same Batman we saw in Batman vs Superman – meaning this movie may take place in the past or is a fresh take all together. It has been pushed back to October from its originally planned June 25, 2021 release date.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Release Date: March 25, 2022
Director: Sam Raimi
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen
Doctor Strange has been pushed back form its May 7, 2021 release date all the way to 2022.
Untitled Spider-Man Sequel
Release Date: November 5, 2021
Director: Jon Watts
Cast: Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon
The new Spider-Man movie was set to open in July of 2021, but they haven’t started shooting yet, and given the Covid-19 crisis, its unclear when they will begin.
The Suicide Squad
Release Date: August 8, 2021
Director: James Gunn
Cast: Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, and Taika Waititi
Shooting rapped on The Suicide Squad before the coronavirus crisis took center stage in North America, so it’s safe to bet that this film will make its release date.
Black Adam
Release Date: December 22, 2021
Director: Jauma Collet-Serra
Cast: Dwayne Johnson
As Black Adam hasn’t started shooting (scheduled to begin filming in July 2020), it’s hard to know if they will be able to shoot or not, thus putting the release date up in the air.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Release Date: February 11, 2022
Director: Taika Waititi
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Christian Bale
This fourth installment in the Thor franchise was set to open on November 5, 2021, but it has been pushed to 2022. However, they haven’t started shooting yet.
Shazam 2
Release Date: April 1, 2022
Director: TBA
Cast: Zachary Levi
The Shazam sequel has a star and a release date but not much else. They haven’t started shooting yet, either.
FURTHER DOWN THE LINE

Release Date: ?
Director: David Yates
Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Johnny Depp, Jude Law, Zoe Kravitz, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Katherine Waterstone
A tentative release date of November 20, 2020 was never officially scheduled, but now we’re seeing November 12, 2021 for a release of part three in the Fantastic Beasts series. However, filming postponed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
The New Mutants
Release Date: TBA
Director: Josh Boone
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Alice Braga, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga
The New Mutants has moved from April 13, 2018 before being moved to February 22, 2019 in favor of Deadpool 2, and then to August 2, 2019 to not cannibalize the market for Dark Phoenix. Finally, the release was moved to April 3, 2020 after the Disney acquisition of Fox, but has now been taken off the release schedule entirely due to the coronavirus crisis.
