They keep a lot of things in motion in “Phantoms,” and the episode title itself is a clue about one of the reveals. I have a theory about something below that might constitute a minor spoiler, but it’s just an informed guess on my part.
There have been a lot of surprises throughout Naomi’s first season. Some of them have clearly been planned, and some of them are just things that I’ve been wondering about that seem to be going on as unexplained and unnoticed.
Between COVID, rising costs, and other factors, the Arrowverse seems to be shrinking again. Over the past week, they announced the cancellation of Batwoman after three seasons and Legends of Tomorrow after their seventh.
DC Comics continues their exploration of stories behind their shows in “Earth Prime.” The first issue of this limited series filled in some holes in the most recent season of Batwoman. Issue two turns from Gotham to Smallville as we check in on Superman and Lois.
Powers and relationships dominate this episode, and while there’s some action, it takes a back seat to several other things. We see the return of an old foe, some complications on the various jobs, and the beginning of a new subplot in “The Fire Next Time.”
Now, in an interesting spin on things, the tv shows based on the comics return to their roots in a six issue comic book series. “Earth Prime” visits several different shows from the CW, filling in some things we didn’t see, due to a combination of budget and COVID.
This episode is odder than many, but in part, that’s actually due to the pandemic. Last season was cut short, so this is both a season opener and wrapping up some details they didn’t get to.
After a season of family drama, “flashback villains” (I love that term), and strained relationships, things are finally coming to a close for season three of Batwoman. As with several Arrowverse shows, the fate of the series hasn’t been decided yet as far as renewal versus cancellation.
Every once in a while, they let the writers have fun on a particular episode of an ongoing series. I suspect the writers’ room for Flash had a blast with this one. There’s not as much action as usual this time out, but they have a lot of relationship developments and some great dialogue.
This season was a bit shorter than the ones in the past, one character leaves, and, so far, there’s no definitive word on whether or not there will be a season 8.
