Single issue stories are a sad rarity these days. It’s hard to find them. I presume that’s because the writers are so often pressed to pad their stories and write for the inevitable trade collection. So it’s a good surprise to find a nicely executed one. Then again, Cullen Bunn has impressed me every time I’ve read his stuff.
Moon Knight gets a new mission from his sometimes difficult patron, Khonshu. It’s an interesting scene, as Marc Spector argues with Khonshu about his assignment. But, Spector is a hero. He helps those who need it, even if he doesn’t really want to.
This is Moon Knight at his supernatural, spooky best. The bad guys are meddling with forces they don’t understand, and they are seriously not prepared for the kind of attention they get. It’s an eerie story with some macabre details.
Plot: It’s a simple but nicely done story. I’ve always liked the ones that play up Moon Knight’s ties to the mystical; it’s one of the things that keeps him from being a second-rate Batman. I’ll give this a 4 out of 5.
Art: The art is gritty and bloody, which matches the story perfectly. It’s a dark tale which is carried forward by the drawings. I’ll give the art a 4 out of 5 also.
Positives: The supernatural is a great place for Moon Knight, and an aspect they skip a lot of the time, aside from his conversations with Khonshu. The bad guys mistaking who and what Moon Knight is makes perfect sense. The art reinforces the story nicely.
Negatives: None, really. It’s a good, simple story. Moon Knight is a spooky character used well here.
I seem to have a fondness for obscure heroes. Moon Knight is a personal favorite and this is a great outing for him.
