Legends of Tomorrow: Marooned

For this week’s episode, “Marooned,” they seem to be patterning themselves off their companion show, Arrow. A good bit of the show is flashback, in this case showing us something of the origins of Captain Rip Hunter. We already know what led to his split with the Time Council, now we get to see the roots of that problem.

Legends of Tomorrow: Blood Ties

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow continues their sojourn in the 1970’s with this week’s “Blood Ties.” The feud between Rip and Vandal Savage goes back further than we realized. They had a run in in 1700 BC Egypt. It didn’t go that well, in part because Rip Hunter is a good man, and Savage is, well, Savage.

iZombie: Fifty Shades of Grey Matter

It really says a lot about a genre show when the characterization and dialogue manages to consistently overwhelm the sci fi/fantasy aspects of it. The writing on iZombie has been pretty damn entertaining, managing to swing from funny to high action to borderline tragic with apparent ease. Add in some great dialogue and the show keeps impressing me.

Flash: Fast Lane

Central City continues to get new metahuman criminals in “Fast Lane.” There are also several personal developments for the STAR Labs crew. They are making an interesting world that mostly reflects the rebooted “DCNU” comic book universe, but has some elements unique to the tv show as well.

Supergirl: Strange Visitor From Another Planet

They are having fun with bits of the Superman mythos on Supergirl. This week’s title, Strange Visitor From Another Planet, is one of the descriptions of Superman from the radio and tv show days. It’s nice to see the nods to the decades-long history of the various characters.

Doctor Fate #8

Khalid continues his journey as the new Dr. Fate. So far, he’s mostly stayed in Brooklyn, aside from a few detours to another plane. Now, he takes a substantial road trip to Mont Saint-Michel, France. It’s actually a nicely balanced story about a servant of one sect of gods helping out people in general. I like how Levitz did this.

Titans Hunt #4

The sort-of reintroduction of the original Teen Titans moves ahead in “Masks.” I’m a bit torn about this whole project. When DC did their big reboot, the group that got screwed over the most was the Teen Titans. As you can see in the original versions of several books in the first few months, even the company itself didn’t have a coherent position on Titans history. This feels like a book that’s trying to compromise. The Titans history is still missing, but there was some weird sorta team that briefly existed that everyone forgot. That’s a great metaphor for the Teen Titans being treated so shabbily by the reboot.

Supergirl: Blood Bonds

Supergirl debuted later than most of the fall shows, and is still doing some odd stuff schedule-wise. It went to hiatus later than the others, and now seems to be back early for one week. I’m not sure I see the plan there, but we get to see a new episode early, so I’ll take it.

Secret Six #9

As is often the case, the Six are in over their heads. Black Alice, one of their own, is losing control of her powers, endangering the magic community. Her teammates have been dragooned into accepting a quest to find a series of mystic pillars. If they destroy them, Black Alice is supposedly saved. Of course, if they do, monsters that look like they escaped from one of HP Lovecraft’s nightmares get loose to kill possibly everyone on Earth.

Who’s Who on Legends of Tomorrow

With a nice series of lead-ins from the CW shows Arrow and Flash, Legends of Tomorrow is slated to start airing in January. A mix of heroes and villains from both shows are brought together to fight an immortal foe throughout time. Below is a brief explanation about who the main characters are.
