It’s been a long wait, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day is getting closer, and they’ve finally released the first official trailer. It has already set a record for most views in 24 hours, and is the last Marvel release before the eagerly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. I have, to no surprise to the people who know me, watched it several times, and now am going to share some of my thoughts and things I’ve noticed.
At the end of No Way Home, Peter made the brave choice to have himself erased from everyone’s memory to prevent a sort of ongoing multiversal leak, and Dr. Strange obliged. Now, Peter is alone, with both his allies in the Avengers and his friends not remembering him. It would have been easy to cut MJ and Ned in the next movie, but they seem to very much be a part of this one. Peter is now very much alone. I think it’s interesting that the scenes they put in show virtually nothing of Peter’s personal life. I have no idea what he’s doing for a job. I would presume he might be back to selling pictures of himself, but we also don’t see any sign of the Daily Bugle or the ever-irascible J. Jonah Jameson.
What we do see are a lot of team ups or cameos, and some new developments with his powers. I won’t hit the specifics of what seems to be up with the powers, but there are several plots from the comics they might be following, and most of them don’t bode well for Peter, although one of them might make something a bit cheaper for him. As for additional characters, there are at least two scenes with the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, and those seem to hit just the right notes. He also goes to Dr. Bruce Banner, apparently when he starts having these problems, and there’s a moment of Bruce asking, “What did you say your name was?” Aside from the obvious joke, this could have two interesting things behind it. Aside from Tony’s funeral, Hulk and Spider-Man never share a scene in the previous movies, so it may be the amnesia spell was even more effective on Banner. Also, in the comics, there was a similar spell at one point, and while Banner forgot what he was supposed to, the Hulk, interestingly, remembered.
For villains, we get several interesting choices. On screen, we see the Scorpion, who was sort of hinted at in Homecoming. The little bit we see seems to have elements of both the comic version of Scorpion’s suit from the comics and the cobbled together look that may be things salvaged from the Chitauri invasion like Vulture’s was. We also get to see a brief glimpse of Tarantula, another comic foe in a suit that seems to be a good adaptation of his comic book look. While we don’t see him, there is one moment of Spider-Man in the midst of a swarm of boomerangs, and Boomerang is another Marvel villain Spidey has clashed with.
We also see a few scenes of Spider-Man fighting the Hand. The Hand is a group of mystic ninjas who have caused problems for several different Marvel heroes. One scene of them facing off has a large blank spot in it, and a lot of people are theorizing about that. For No Way Home, they removed the other two Spider-Men from the image before the release. One of the Hand’s most frequent foes is Daredevil, who is also in New York and has become slowly more integrated into the MCU. So was he erased from the Hand fight? I guess we’ll find out.
I don’t usually do a rating for a trailer, but this one has me really excited. I’m giving this a 5 out of 5, and I’m really looking forward to the movie itself and the next trailer. I wonder who else might show up in this one.
