The trailer is out for James Gunn’s Superman. It’s hard to tell a lot from a small slice, but here are my initial reactions. This felt a LOT more like Superman to me than Cavill/Snyder’s version ever did (my opinion, feel free to ignore/disagree). It didn’t have the overwhelmingly dark palate of the DCEU/Snyderverse. They used a remix of John Williams’ amazing theme, which at least hints at respect for what’s come before. They showed a lot of characters, some of whom looked fantastic and others I’d want a better look at before I give any kind of judgement.
As a lifelong hero geek, who has seen at least most, if not all, major superhero movies that have been released, I am cautiously optimistic. Given DC’s recent track record, that’s saying a lot. I’m sure we’ll see a lot more between now and July. I’m definitely looking forward to that, and maybe… maybe… Gunn will work some magic here like he did with a relatively unknown group of Marvel space-faring heroes.
Like they’ve said in several recent iterations of the Superman mythos, regarding his symbol: It means hope.
