With Secret Invasion finally here, I’m going to avoid a lot of the Skrull speculation and focus on one of the new characters, at least for now. The always impressive Olivia Coleman joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portraying a British Intelligence agent named Sonya Falsworth. While this character is an original, the Falsworth name has a history in Marvel Comics.

In World War I, there was a small, relatively unknown group of heroes fighting against the Germans known as the Freedom’s Five. One of these was Union Jack, a non-powered hero in a patriotic costume with conventional weapons. Union Jack was the codename for Lord James Montgomery Falsworth, a wealthy British aristocrat moved by patriotism and honor. He fought against assorted foes, including the vampiric Baron Blood. He enjoyed a quite life between the wars, and then became active again when World War II broke out.
Lord James was older by then, and having some health issues. Eventually, his son Brian took over the costumed identity, fighting alongside the Invaders, and such famed heroes as Captain America, the Human Torch, and the Sub-Mariner among others. In a convoluted origin story involving a vampire, synthetic blood from an android, and assorted retcons over the years, Lord James’ daughter Jacqueline gained powers and eventually became the superheroine Spitfire, gifted with superhuman speed (but never at anything close to the levels of DC’s Flash, or even Quicksilver). In the modern era, there is a third Union Jack, but he’s not related to the previous two.
In the MCU, James Montgomery Falsworth has a “blink and you’ll miss it” role in Captain America: The First Avenger. He’s one of the prisoners Cap rescues on his unauthorized mission during World War II, with roughly one line of dialogue, and a moment where Falsworth restores Cap’s shield to him in the big raid on the Hydra base. Later, we learn of Falsworth’s death when Cap wakes up in the modern era. So there’s at least a Falsworth heroic tradition in the MCU.
There’s no guarantee, of course, that Sonya Falsworth has anything to do with James, Union Jack, or anything else. But Marvel rarely picks names by accident. The writers of the various movies and shows seem to have a good command of the Marvel Universe, both comics and Cinematic. I’m betting we’ll get some passing mention of her being related to the character from the Captain America movie, or a picture in the background, or something. Secret Invasion seems to be avoiding superheroes (I’ve seen several clips of Rhodey, but none of him in the War Machine armor, for example). So I’m not holding my breath for a new (or flashbacked) Union Jack or Spitfire.
But it’ll be interesting to see how they spin this name with so much history from Marvel.
