While it’s not a show without flaws, Gotham Knights has taken an original approach. They’ve drawn in different elements from a lot of different versions of the Bat-mythos, and made the interesting choice of opening the series with Batman’s death. They weave in a few other interesting bits with this episode, “A Chill in Gotham.”
Despite some really badly done trailers, Gotham Knights turned out to be an enjoyable show, even if it only lasted one season. One of the things I enjoyed about the show was that they created a new spin on Gotham, bringing in elements from many different versions of the Bat-mythos.
The weird mashup of various versions of Gotham City is an interesting place. They’ve taken elements from all sorts of different tellings of the various Bat-related stories, and made something new, with a collection of characters that are mostly from different times and places, with a few originals. With the looming threat of the Court…
The group that’s being forced to work together is starting to gel, and while I don’t think they’ll be a team for any of the usual reasons, survival is a good motivator. With most of the city turned against them, the gang really is “Under Pressure.”
As I mentioned in the review about the pilot, they borrow story elements from all over the Batman mythos, and make something unique. I’m enjoying so far, as the plot thickens in “Scene of the Crime.”
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I have a lot of questions about characters either referred to in passing or not named at all, but I hope we’ll get there.
They have an interesting mix of characters from the original Outsiders comics, the Judas Contract in New Teen Titans, and a few other places.
Whatever the fate of the related Arrowverse series, the end is not quite here for the concept of these shows. While I’ve heard little about the “Gotham U” show that’s supposed to figure David Ramsey’s John Diggle since the initial announcement, there’s at least one more show coming to the CW.
After a lot of setup, we get a tragic origin of an important character in the DC Universe, especially in the ranks of the younger ones. There’s also a first day of school, the introduction of a minor Bat-character, a much-needed attitude adjustment, and a few deep cuts for trivial side characters.
