I’ve watched a lot of superheroes on tv and in the movies. There have been good versions, and horrible ones, creative spins on old favorites, and interesting new heroes with new stories to tell. What’s impressing me with Superman and Lois is that it’s a show about actual, mature characters.
The Arrowverse is a very strange place, when you consider what not only the various heroes, but the average citizen, has to go through over the course of time. Flash is in the seventh year of his career now, and he and his team have seen a lot. That sort of experience comes into play a few times during the episode.
We get to see a bit of characters actually having lives, which has been largely lacking in the MCU (do I need to say why either Tony Stark or Wanda’s “homelife” doesn’t count?). Sam Wilson and James “Bucky” Barnes are trying to find their places in the “New World Order.”
What do you do when one of the lead actors in your show decides to leave? There have been a lot of ways to approach it in the past, from killing the character, to recasting and pretending nothing’s different, among others. Well, you have a lot more options on a show where comic book logic and science play a part.
While I consider myself a big hero fan, I can’t watch everything at once. Sometimes, this results in me taking a while to get to something that’s been out for some time. That’s the case with The Boys, which I’m just starting now.
This time around, there’s a bit of a change, as a character who is usually one of my favorites gets kind of obnoxious, and one I don’t care for that much gets some great scenes.
The first episode was fantastically well done, and I admit, I wondered if that was just kind of major effort for their start and things would trail off. So far, they haven’t. The show has done well with the characters, the writing, the acting, and respecting the Superman mythos but still blazing their own trail.
It’s safe to say that nothing goes according to plan as Barry gains a new power and it causes a lot of complications. Thankfully, Cisco and Caitlin are back for the “Speed of Thought.”
…most things got better this episode, as well as one major surprise. There’s a lot going on as we start the next subsection of the season in “The Book of Ruin: Chapter One: Picking Up the Pieces.”
The first episode of Superman and Lois impressed the hell out of me, and, as a life-long hero-geek, that’s not the easiest thing to do, especially with a character that’s never been one of my favorites. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one, as after just one episode, the show was renewed for a second season.
