Avengers Endgame: The Encore Added Scenes

When they announced the rerelease of Avengers: Endgame in an encore edition, I already knew I wanted to see it. Then I heard there were three added scenes that helped set up for Doomsday, and I was even more interested. That’s been out for a while, so I don’t feel bad going into detail about the scenes. But, unlike many of my reviews, this will have detailed spoilers.

So this is your chance to not read/get spoiled.

You have been warned.

They all come at the end of the movie. The original cut of Endgame ends with Steve Rogers finally getting that dance with Peggy Carter, a very well deserved reward and the kick off to hopefully him living happily ever after. It certainly looked like it. However, in the encore edition, things change. They dance for a few moments, and then there’s a knock on the door. Steve hides, and Peggy goes to answer. She asks, “May I help you,” and gets a very unexpected answer as Loki responds, “No, but I think I can help you. Both of you.” Clearly, this is after the events of Loki season two, when he has redeemed himself. I am looking forward to seeing Steve’s reaction, though. As far he knows, Loki is still the evil madman who brought the Chitauri down on New York City.

The next scene is in the midst of the end credits, and as best I can tell, is set after the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Dr. Banner narrates that he recently had an incident for the first time in over a decade, and has now isolated himself in a bunker two miles under the surface of the Earth. I am still curious what happened to the balance we saw in Endgame, as in Brand New Day, Banner was human again, not the merged “Smart Hulk.” Dr. Banner, even shut away on his own, can’t stop his mind from working, and begins sharing the results of a new experiment. Suddenly, there’s an intruder, the camera is knocked over, and Banner is yelling something along the lines of “Wait, stop, who are you?” He gets told something along the lines of “I am here to collect you,” there is a flash of green energy, and then the camera shows the stone floor of Banner’s hideout marked up by symbols that look very similar to the runes Dr. Doom has been using in the footage we’ve seen so far. I have no idea what Doom’s up to, but him getting control of the power of the Hulk is not good for anyone.

The final scene is at the very, very end. As some may remember, Endgame finished with the sound of Tony forging his armor in the cave from the first Iron Man movie. A sort of coming full circle moment for the character that over the course of the Infinity War Saga went from selfish playboy to self-sacrificing hero. But now, as there are brief flashes of Tony at work, the final image is Doom. You can interpret that in many different ways, since Robert Downey, Jr, plays both roles. But it was certainly intriguing.

The extra scenes did their job, and got me even more curious and excited about Doomsday. I am very much looking forward to December. It will be interesting to see what they have in store for some of my favorite heroes, who shows up, and who doesn’t.

Doomsday opens December 18, 2026.
