I’m a huge Nightwing fan, so I was very glad to see he was back in costume again. I really didn’t care for the “Grayson” title. Dick as a spy didn’t really interest me. But now he’s back, and the costume has the classic blue accents again instead of the red silliness of the reboot, which never made any sense to me.
As an individual issue, it’s hard for me to rate this one. From what I can get from context, it was mostly dedicated to wrapping up dangling plot lines from the Grayson title. I didn’t read that title, so there was a lot of “Hmm… ok… what does this mean?” going on for me. The part that didn’t quite work for me was Helena Bertinelli becoming the Huntress. They’ve already had a Helena/Huntress on this Earth using that name, and that was after the reboot. So this is really kind of unlikely to me.
But even through the scenes of things I wasn’t quite sure about what was happening in, the characterization wsa dead on. Dick cares about other people. When books change directions, or characters get new titles, usually the supporting cast of the old book just vanishes without a trace. Dick spending time saying goodbye to people makes a lot of sense.
Plot: Again, a bit hard to rate since I don’t have the background on most of these scenes. I’ll give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 for characterization and attention to detail.
Art: I didn’t love the art. Some of the faces seemed like they had details missing, and the panel layout was occasionally confusing. I’ll go 2.5 out of 5 for the art.
Positives: Dick is back in costume, and it’s the right costume. He gets in some action, but also touches base with the people who were important to him in the last title. While I’ve never liked Damian, Dick has a relationship with him like he used to have with Tim before the reboot, and that was good to see.
Negatives: The bit with Helena didn’t work for me. I didn’t care for the art. It didn’t really stand as an individual issue. But I’m willing to forgive all that.
I’m glad Nightwing is back, and the blue is back. I will be getting this book unless they do something remarkably stupid.
