Secret Wars 2099 #2

2099

The future Avengers continue their story. I’m most interested in the new Captain America. David has created a very interesting character with a compelling backstory. She has secrets even from herself, and others being kept from her completely. I could see this getting complicated as time passes. There are also secrets involving Miguel and the Black Widow.

Following up on a clue from an attack on Roberta, the team go after a weapons dealer. Unfortunately, John Eisenhart gets there first. Eisenhart is the future version of the Hulk (a spoiler I’m willing to go with since Hulk’s on the cover). But the Hulk isn’t alone. The issue ends with a confrontation between the Avengers and another new team with an old name.

Plot: The story of these future heroes is interesting. I like what they’re doing with Cap and Widow, and the inclusion of Hercules is a choice that makes sense. Quite a few Avengers could still be around in this era, actually, and Hercules is certainly one of them. I’ll give the plot a 3.5 out of 5.

Art: Sliney did a great job on Spider-Man 2099, and continues to do so here. He and David work well together. I don’t like the Hawkeye on this team, but that’s a personal preference, not a flaw in the art. I like how he handles the transitions from Roberta to Cap especially. I’ll give the art a 3.5 out of 5 as well.

Positives: The twist on the new Cap is a really interesting version of the secret identity trope. Widow’s hobby is believable, and her conversation with Stone was illuminating. And I think we got a cameo by one of the 2099 X-Men as well. The Hulk and his new team should give the Avengers some decent rivals and challenges.

Negatives: As seems to happen in the movies and cartoons, Hawkeye isn’t getting much screen time. We don’t know much about the new Iron Man as yet, either. Thankfully it’s not Arno Stark from 2020.

I really liked the 2099 books when they came out back when, and the world is a fun one to visit. I don’t think the Avengers were touched on in the previous books of this era, and I like how Peter David is building the team. Im not wild about Battleworld as a whole, but I’m liking this title.
