The Death of Superman was a major event in the comics in 1993. It hit at just the right time in a slow news cycle so that it got a truly impressive amount of coverage in the mainstream media, reaching nightly news shows and even Entertainment Tonight.
They have managed a few good surprises in the second season of Krypton, and a lot of the writing has gotten better. The twists have made sense and haven’t been, “Oh, let’s throw this in to shake things up.”
The writers on Krypton got really clever with this episode. There were some great twists and turns along the way that I did not see coming.
The puns on Zod’s name continue with, “Zods and Monsters.” Personally, I think that’s a bit redundant, since Zod is a monster in my book, but there are a few others in this episode.
Since DC released Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen as a double feature in the theater, I’m going to review them together.
As usual with season finales, there are likely going to be spoilers in this one. Be warned.
Krypton ends its first season with a title that is chilling for anyone who knows more than just the basics of the Superman mythos: “The Phantom Zone.”
And so we’ve come to the end of the epic Death of Superman story arc! Part 7, which was published in 1993 as Superman #75 , is basically a money shot heaven for comic book fans hungering after splash page after splash page. This completes that whole “counting down” to Superman’s death with each of these final parts having one fewer panel per page than the one before. This also makes covering the blow-by-blow dissection of this issue very easy for me. So, without further delay, let’s get ready to RUMBLE!!!!!!!!

Last time, we discovered that Doomsday’s bloodlust is leading him directly to Metropolis after seeing a commercial for a wrestling match being held at the arena in Superman’s adopted home city. Welcome back to Comic Book Classics Revisited. Today, we are looking at The Death of Superman Part 4 (Adventures of Superman #487). Where we last left off, Superman was chasing after Doomsday after the monster destroyed the home of teenage jerk Mitch and his mother. With the Justice League down, Mitch cried out to Superman to come back and save him and his family from the fiery rubble of their home. Superman is caught between a rock and a hard place – stop Doomsday or save the family that were innocent bystanders of Doomsday’s rampage.
