The Secret Six continue their quest to deal with the white pillars and save Black Alice. They’ve been running into various opposition, since the destruction of the pillars supposedly will let horrific Elder Gods into our world. This time, they have more serious problems, as suggested by the title, “Watch A Yellow Sun Fade.” If that’s not enough of a clue, they end up in Metropolis.
Aside from the regular cast, and the Super-guest star, Zatanna makes a cameo. Also working with the team are favorites from the old incarnation of the book Jeanette, Scandal, and Ragdoll, as well as Etrigtan the demon. Gail is slowly rebuilding the Secret Six in spite of the reboot. Now if she could just get Deadshot back…
One of the really interesting things we learn is a much better idea of how new character Porcelain’s power works. It’s a clever idea, and especially dangerous to people with powers like Superman. They also hint that some of the old JLA continuity is still around with some words between Big Shot and Superman. The ending is a bit disturbing, with what seems like a victory for the Six. Then again, they never quite manage to win, do they?
Plot: I’ll give this a 4 out of 5 for plot. I love the different threads Gail brought together here. In the interests of disclosure, I’m a Gail Simone fan boy, which was made even stronger when I got to have lunch with her once.
Art: Eaglesham does some great work on the art. Porcelain’s power looks really nice here, as do the various magical powers on display. I’ll say 4 out of 5 for the art.
Positives: I love the nods to previous history in this story. Superman is used believably, and the end of that conflict worked nicely. The ending of the book is interestingly enigmatic. There were nice references to both old Secret Six and Satellite Era JLA history.
Negatives: Very few. The end could have been a bit clearer, but I like how she did it. Most of the bad guys are still out there in play. But the Six don’t get many even, or decent, breaks.
Next issue sounds very interesting, giving Gail a chance to write another of her favorite characters.
