This actually came out some time ago, but I had other commitments at the time. But, I really enjoyed this series and didn’t want to not review the final issue. The climax of the series shows Red on the island fortress of her foe, Dr. Frankenstein. Some of her allies fall, and some turn on her. There’s a lot of fighting and some last minute heroics from an unexpected source.
Red manages to come out on top, with a little help. There’s a happy ending, of sorts, for some of those she met along the way, and Victor Frankenstein is dealt with, hopefully permanently. The issue ends with Red on her new ship (and which one it is comes as a surprise, too) sailing off to hopefully more adventures.
Plot: The entire story, as well as the final issue here, is a fun adventure tale. Red Sonja is a lot of fun, depending on who writes her, and Andreyko is great with strong female characters. The story has a fine, swashbuckler feel to it, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll give the series as whole a 4.5 for plot, and the final issue a 4 out of 5.
Art: The art throughout has been gorgeous, and a lot of Red’s expressions have been great. The covers and the interior art have been fantastically done. I’ll give the art a high 4.5 out of 5.
Positives: This is a fun story with many elements drawn from the Victorian era, more or less. The steampunk elements, and Red as a pirate, worked surprisingly well. The story ends in a way that absolutely makes sense, but also leaves the door open for hopefully more stories.
Negatives: I really don’t have a lot. I’d love to see more of this character, so I’m not happy this is the finale, but that’s the nature of a limited series. Frankenstein seems to be crossing over into Dr. Moreau’s territory in this story, and that same character is already in this world, so I would have liked to see some kind of nod to him. Otherwise, no complaints at all.
This was a lot of fun, and probably my favorite of the Legenderry books. I very much hope the world, and especially this character, return at some point.
