Legenderry Red Sonja #4

Red has not been having an easy adventure in this series and this is no exception. Last issue’s cliffhanger is an ugly one, and she has a serious fight on her hands. She gets some help from an unexpected ally. The ally is a bit of a surprise, but it was subtly set up last issue.

The unlikely team finds their way to Frankenstein’s lair, and eventually figure out a way inside. Frankenstein, meanwhile, punishes one of his men who helped Sonja earlier in the series. Frankenstein is an old school villain, and deals with disappointments harshly. It does, however, give him one of the best lines of the issue, referring to Sonja as the “scarlet-haired swordstress,” which is a great phrase I may borrow myself at some point.

Sonja and company find their way in, but they are far outnumbered. They fight their way in, but almost immediately get right back out after a few close calls. In the wilds of the island, Sonja is pursued by creatures that look like creations of Dr. Moreau. The only problem with that is, said doctor is bedeviling Vampirellla in her series, so he can’t be here, too.

Plot: Andreyko is a great writer who does particularly well with female characters. He’s been doing a great job with this series, giving it a fun, swashbuckling feel. Sonya’s new ally worked well and the set up last issue was really deftly done. I’ll give this a 4 out of 5 for plot.

Art: Juanan Ramirez’ art is great. Red looks both dangerous and gorgeous. Some of her expressions are great. I’m really enjoying his artwork, especially on Sonya. I’ll give the art here a 4 out of 5 as well.

Positives: Just about everything. The writing is great, the art fits perfectly, the story is entertaining, and it’s just plain fun. And I really loved the “swordstress” line.

Negatives: Very little. I’m a bit confused about the animal men that pop up, but that’s not a big deal. Overall, the Legenderry series have been great, and this is no exception.

I’m having a lot of fun with Red Sonja. She’s never been a huge favorite of mine, but this spin on her is one I’m really enjoying. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
