Star Wars Annual #2 review

The brave Rebel Alliance and the tyrannical Empire clash in their seemingly endless war. Everyone knows the two sides and what they stand for. But what about other people? No war has everyone take one side or the other. This annual tells the story of Pash Davane, a large and powerful laborer nicknamed Bash. Her planet, Skoril-Lei has been harshly damaged by the Galactic Civil War, and all she sees is death and destruction on both sides.

But, while she’s no fan of either side, Bash isn’t some kind of monster, either. So she ends up caring for a wounded and ill Princess Leia. They have discussions that range from philosophical debate to outright violence. Somewhat predictably, they have to work together to stay a step ahead of Stormtroopers who don’t care what Bash’s views might be on the war. There’s action, humor, and a point of view you don’t often see in a Star Wars story. It’s nicely written and original. I enjoyed it.

Plot: I’ll give the plot a 4 out of 5. It was fun to read, had a different viewpoint from most Star Wars tales, and I really found myself liking Pash/Bash. I’d like to see more of her, and isn’t that the best thing you can usually say about a story? That you want to know more?

Art: The art wasn’t quite as good. Pash isn’t human, but her skin tone seemed to change a lot. Not like it was a trait of her species, it looked like it was inconsistent coloring. Other than that, it was decent art. I’ll go 3 out of 5 for it.

Positives: I’ve been a fan of Star Wars since it came out in 1977 (yeah, compared to some of you, I’m old). This was a good addition to the canon. I liked Bash, I like and understand her point of view, and it makes perfect sense that “regular people” might have questions about the war. The dialogue with Bash and Leia was well done.

Negatives: As I said, some of the art is inconsistent. It might’ve been interesting to see a longer story where Bash wasn’t won over so quickly. And that’s all I’ve got.

I thought this was a good story as a Star Wars fan, comic book fan, and writer myself. If you like the adventures from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, you should really check this one out.
