I know, I know… it’s just a poster. But, I’m reading things into what is on and what is missing from the Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster. Or, to put it another way, “This poster is making me nervous.”
Anyway, here’s the vertical version.
So, I have two problems here:
1. Is that a third FUCKING DEATH STAR?
Seriously, they’re doing this again? Are you kidding? There’s another Death Star? Someone in this universe still thinks this is a good idea? “We’ve got it this time.” That thing is going to draw a lot of fire; they might as well paint a huge target on it. Don’t they teach history in their design schools?
2. No Luke Skywalker on the poster… right? He better not be!
Let me put it right out there on Front Street: if it turns out to be Luke Skywalker behind the mask and he’s repeating his father’s path, I am going to be super disappointed. I can’t be alone in wanting to see Luke rebuilding the Jedi order while dealing with a rogue nephew while training his niece to be the champion of this generation. That seems like the most logical path for this film… If they want to follow the Star Wars formula, Luke should die in this movie as he’s the only wise old mentor around… although Han could fit this bill, too!
But on the other hand, if the story is compelling, I’m sure I won’t care who’s doing what. If Luke’s going to be the bad guy, they need to not wimp out: Luke needs to kill EVERYONE from the original trilogy in this movie. The first words out of his mouth better be, “I’m Luke Skywalker. I’m here to murder you.”
Or maybe he’s just not in the movie very much – there’s been lots of rumors that a big part of the plot is the good guys trying to find Luke so he can help them work the problem.
Whatever the case may be, we just need a solid story. We already know we’re going to be OK in the performance, directing and visual effects departments (Right?), so no matter the plot, we just need them to spin a yarn worth watching.
We’ll have to trust in The Force to make it so.
